The excesses of Christmas are over and a brand new year beckons. So if you made any new year resolutions about getting fitter, losing weight or expanding your social life, we want to help you achieve them. Dance lessons recommence on the 1st of Feb 2010 providing an easy opportunity to achieve your goals.

At present we are still focused on beginner dancers. Our first group has come a long way in just one term. Some are almost ready to experience the challenge of intermediate RocknRoll but a few more weeks consolidating beginner moves will give them a big confidence boost. What I’m saying is … we’re not quite ready to open up for Improvers yet. For those of you still hanging out the wait will be a bit longer. I’m hoping to announce Intermediates later in the term.

In the meantime, if you’re not already on our newsletter list consider joining up. It only takes a few seconds and you’ll be notified quickly of any upcoming courses or workshops.

It’s only been four lessons since we started in Thornlie and by all accounts students are progressing well. A few have commented how helpful they’ve found the revision videos. There’s a lot to remember when people first start out. Julie and I are trying to make it as easy as possible by adding a new video each week. Already we’re up to 9 clips in the Beginners RocknRoll section.

But the fact remains, dancing just once a week is not enough if you really want to get the hang of it. So make a date with yourself (better still, with a friend) to go through them a few days after class. You’ll be amazed at what extra useful information you pick up.

The next course starts on November the 16th and unfortunately the honeymoon can’t last forever. For those wanting to continue on the cost will be $60 for 5 weeks (paid up front) or $15 week by week. Now if that seems a lot just remember after completing the full 10 week program you can repeat it as many times as you like for half that amount.

The truth is that after 10 weeks not everybody is ready to join an intermediate class. It depends on how much dance experience they get along the way.

If you think that might be you we encourage you to keep at. Keep doing the beginners material until you’re ready to move on. Learning it is not a race and there’s no prize for being the first to reach improver’s level. But moving on too quickly is like trying to ride a bike without having learnt to walk yet.

Also, as an In2jive student you can pick our brains any time you see us out socially. Even better, ask us for a dance. Don’t be shy. Our greatest reward is to see you progress and fall in love with RocknRoll.

But first, let me say a special THANK YOU to everyone brave enough to come to our first lesson in Thornlie on Monday night. It was mostly people we didn’t know which is great because we love making new friends.

Actually it was a little nerve wracking at the start.

Julie’s car had radiator trouble which meant I rushed out the door early to pick her up from work – forgetting to pack the amplifier in my haste. Not a good look for the first night

On the bright side it was a good opportunity to put the backup system to the test. With over a dozen people present the sound was barely audible once everybody got to chatting. So I guess it’s off to Harvey Norman sometime soon to pick up a boom box with more grunt.

Yeah, yeah, I know, you’d rather hear about the free lessons.

It’s like this. We haven’t promoted the classes in the media yet. We’d prefer that you tell people about it by word of mouth. “FREE RocknRoll lessons in Thornlie for the next 4 weeks“. We decided to extend our opening special a while longer so that more people could find out about it.

It’s a no-brainer really.

Thornlie Bowling Club – Monday nights – 7pm to 9pm. And yes, it really is a 2 hour lesson.

See ya next week.

It’s confirmed !!!

After months of searching and weeks of negotiations we have finally secured a new birth place for Rock’n'Roll in Perth. The venue in question is Thornlie Bowling Club and it’s where Julie and I will roll out our social dance classes.

You should see the place… It’s warm and inviting and the dance floor is immaculate. What’s more, the management are really keen to see us prosper. Good news for Rock’n'Roll and even better news for any who wants to learn in a great atmosphere.

Kicking things off on 12th of October is the first round of beginner’s Rock’n'Roll. As soon as that’s established we will phase in improvers classes (early 2010). We’ll send out details when that happens. In the meantime stay tuned to this site.

Dancers can learn as many dance moves as they want … hundreds … but they’ll never feel the real heart and soul of Rock’n'Roll until they don some retro gear. There’s something about dancing in a Teddy-Boy jacket or petticoat and circle skirt that adds to the experience.

Somehow it channels the vibe from that era and brings with it an energy that just can’t be faked. In street wear it’s just steps. Put on the right clothing and suddenly it comes to life. The dancers in this video are a great example. The dancing is raw and vibrant. You can tell they’re really into it!

In later articles we’ll show you ways to capture the 50’s Haute Couture on a budget. With a little time spent in op shops and some clever alterations you’ll find it’s actually quite easy.

Well, I don’t know about perfect but it sure helps the memory out. Even going through what you learned in class for 5 minutes ago, when you get home makes a big difference in remembering for the following week’s lesson or social. Several times I have heard “well we can’t seem to find the time together to practice during the week with our busy schedules”. My response is “practice yourself.”

It’s amazing how going over pivot turns by yourself or thinking about where you prep to lead a turn really improves your own dancing. Then in class you can practice together. And secondly, attend some dances, if you don’t already, that’s where you can have fun socially with everyone from your group class plus get some floor time in. Who cares if you mess up, that’s why everyone else is there too, for the practice!!
